The Wonders of the Vatican Library 2-DVD Set
More than a repository of priceless art and antiquities, the Vatican Apostolic Library, as we learn in the compelling The Wonders of the Vatican Library, is a veritable history of the Church of Rome and its governance of Catholic dogma. Written and directed by Vincenzo Labella, producer of Franco Zeffirelli's beautiful Jesus of Nazareth, Wonders is not so much for armchair tourists as it is for fans of great storytelling drama. The cornerstone of the Vatican, Labella tells us, is the fact of St. Peter's martyrdom, which inspired construction of both the Basilica and the Library. While the latter contains many precious manuscripts and staggeringly beautiful gifts from faraway lands, its most important asset are scores of frescoes depicting such important events as the church's Council of Trent, a response to Luther's Reformation.
A second disc in this volume concerns a fascinating history of the Rosary and its roots in the cult of Mary-worship.
